Interesting Tidbits -
I first realized I wanted to be a musical artist… when I sang in my 1st contest at age 13. It was a rush!
I want to be a singer/songwriter because… I can put to music what I feel and want to say and then say it to the world thru my music!
The most exciting part of my career so far… Performing at a show with Buddy Guy and Patti LaBelle in a huge arena.
Most unusual job: Hostess at a Steak House.
First paying gig: Johnny Highs Music Review in Arlington, TX. Lee Ann Rimes got her start there. I made a whopping $30. I never cashed the check.
Job I would rather starve than do: Clean Houses
My hero is… My Mama, She is my best friend too.
Posters on my wall: Elvis, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe
First childhood crush on a star: Leonardo DiCaprio
Ideal date: Dinner at Houstons and a Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin or Bonnie Raitt concert.
If I could tour with anyone it would be… Muse, Jonny Lang, Zakk Wylde
If I could meet anyone, dead or alive, and ask them one question, it would be… Elvis...Where have you been hiding all these years?
Telling people about yourself as a person and a musician isnt always the easiest thing to do. I dont really like talking about myself but I guess that is what a Bio is all about. So here goes...
I was born and raised in Memphis, TN. I lived in Charlotte, NC for about 2 years but other than that I have lived my whole life in the home of the blues and the King of Rock and Roll. My musical roots are planted in that great Memphis blues, Classic Rock & Staxx Soul with a little Country thrown in.
I always liked to sing and dance around the house and when playing with my cousins while growing up. My mom would make me sing for people in the grocery store, at the beauty shop, just wherever she was. I once sang for our dentist and he told my mom to checkout the West Tennessee Youth Chorus by contacting a lady named Martha Wright. So shortly thereafter I joined the youth chorus and we traveled to sing at the White House and in Europe. That was so much fun and I loved performing.
After 1 year with the chorus I decided to take voice lessons so my mom found a vocal coach, Brandi Bell, and she started working with me one on one. She enrolled me in a contest and I was scared to death at the thought of me performing by myself in a competition. I cried the night before the contest and tried to backout but my parents encouraged me to give it a chance and I am so glad I did. Once the music started my jitters went away and I had a blast and won 1st place in the contest so I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Entertain People!
I started song writing in early 2003 with some talented producers, Jim Allison and Stephanie McKenna. We completed my 1st CD, Outside the Lines, at the end of 2003. I am very proud of the CD.
I am now working on my new CD and hope to release either an EP or Full Album by mid to late 2007. I have evolved a lot since that 1st album and have honed in on more of my Memphis Roots influences.
Most young singers start out by singing to music tracks when they perform. I was no different so I began singing at some festivals and events around Memphis. I was 14 when I 1st performed on World Famous Beale Street at B.B. Kings, thanks to their Manager, J.B. Wells. After that experience and seeing all the bands that performed their music live on Beale I knew it was time to take things to the next level. My 1st experience in singing with a live band came at the Strand Theater in Millington, TN. Justin Timberlake is from there and he use to sing out at the Strand as well. You show up on Thursday night with 2 songs that you want to perform and you practice them for about 10 minutes with the house band and then you perform on Saturday night to a great crowd. It is a ton of fun. So after playing with a live band in front of a crowd I started putting together my own band and started booking gigs. Things just fell into place and I have been blessed with a killer band now. Over the last year we have played some really awesome gigs that include performing with Buddy Guy and Patti LaBelle. It has been awesome to meet such talented muscians like Andy Childs, Buddy Guy, Steve Azar, Bo Diddley, Delbert McClinton and many others.
My music has really evolved since I wrote those 1st songs for my debut CD. I cant fight the classic rock, blues and soul influences inside me that I attribute to growing up in Memphis. I have learned that the most important thing is to 1st find out who you are as a musician and then stay true to yourself. Right now I just want to keep writing songs and keep performing and continuing to grow and develop into the artist I am suppose to be.
I have been ask a lot to describe who I am as an artist and that is hard to do. I love to sing soulful songs like "Never Loved a Man" by Aretha and great passionate ballads like "Turn Me On" by Norah Jones but I also like to Rock it Out. "Let it Ride" by Bachman, Turner Overdrive and "Free Ride" by Edgar Winter are 2 favorites to sing right now. My new music will lean a lot on Classic Rock in a more modern twist. I love Bonnie Raitt music because it has a great Southern Rock edge to it but I also like Aerosmith and Journey. My brother Dustin turned me on to a lot of Classic and Metal rock because he had it cranked up all the time.
If you come to one of my concerts you will hear a variety of music that ranges from Rock to Blues to Soul, with a small taste of Country. We have a lot of fun and I think you will too so I hope to see you there one day soon. Until then please drop me an email every now and then. I love hearing from new people and what they have going on in their life.
